PROVIDENCE, R.I. -
Providence College women's ice hockey student-athlete Genevieve Lacasse (Kingston, Mass.) has been named Goaltender of the Month for March by the Women's Hockey East Association. It is the fifth time in her career she has been recognized with the award.
It is the latest in a month full of accomplishments for the netminder. She was named a New England Hockey Writer's All-Star, a Hockey East Second-Team All-Star, and an All-Tournament team selection after playing over 179 minutes of playoff hockey without allowing a goal.
During the month of March, Lacasse led the Friars to within 7.7 seconds of the Hockey East Championship. She shut out #7 Northeastern, 2-0, in the semifinals on March 3 by stopping all 41 shots she faced (including 15 in the third period). She then halted 48 shots in the double-overtime loss to #9 Boston University in final on March 4. The senior broke the Hockey East records for saves in a single tournament (127) and career tournament saves (276). For the two games, she registered a save percentage of .978 and a goals against of 0.75.
This week, Lacasse was named to Team Canada's World Championship roster by Hockey Canada. The Friar will be one of three goalies suiting up for her country at this week's World Championships in Burlington, Vt.
This will be Lacasse's first World Championship and second tournament with Canada's senior team. In August, she earned two victories for the red and white at the 12 Nations' Tournament, including a shootout victory over Team USA.
This year's World Championship is being held from April 7 to April 14 in Burlington, Vt. Canada opens up against the United States, its rival and the defending World Champion, on Saturday April 7 at Gutterson Field House. Face-off is scheduled for 7 p.m and tickets are available at www.Burlington2012.com or via the University of Vermont athletic ticket office.
