Ray Treacy Named Men's and Women's Cross Country NCAA Northeast Regional Coach of the Year
Nov. 18, 2004 PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- It was announced on Thursday, November 18 by the U.S. Cross Country Coaches' Association and the Women's Intercollegiate Cross Country Coaches Association that Providence College Head Coach Ray Treacy was named NCAA Northeast Regional Men's and Women's Coach of the Year. It marks the second time in six years that Treacy has earned the NCAA Northeast Regional Coach of the Year honors for both the men and the women. He also earned both accolades in 1998.
Treacy, who was the 1995 NCAA Women's Cross Country Coach of the Year, guided the Providence men's and women's cross country teams to first place finishes at the 2004 NCAA Northeast Regional Championships on Saturday, November 13 at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y. The women's squad was led by senior Kim Smith (Auckland, New Zealand), who captured her second consecutive NCAA Northeast Regional crown. The men were paced by senior Patrick Moulton (Pelham, N.H.), who finished fourth.
In 1995, Treacy led the women's cross country team to the College's only NCAA Champiosnhip. In addition, the men's and women's cross country teams have recorded a combined 20 top-10 finishes at the NCAA's in his tenure. In 2000, Treacy guided Keith Kelly `02 to the NCAA cross country individual title in Ames, Iowa. Kelly became the first runner at Providence College to win the individual crown. Treacy, a 1982 Providence College graduate, was a three-time All-American at PC and has been head coach at Providence for 21 years. He was the Friars' team captain as a junior and senior. The former Irish national junior champion and past member of the Irish National Cross Country Team, Treacy currently resides in Warwick, Rhode Island with his wife, Lisa, and their two sons, Michael and Liam.
