PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College women's cross country team climbed to No. 12 in the FinishLynx Division I Women's Cross Country National Poll, which was released on Monday, November 18.

Providence received 230 points and moved three spots to No. 12. Brigham Young continued its hold on the top spot with 389 points and 12 first place votes. Stanford (378), Colorado (360), Wake Forest (347) and Notre Dame (334) round out the top five.

On Saturday, November 16, the Friars finished second at the NCAA Regional Championships in Van Cortlandt Park, N.Y. Providence (75 points) finished behind Columbia (70 points). With the second place finish, the Friars qualified for their 14th consecutive NCAA Championship. Sophomore Mary Cullen (Sligo, Ireland) and senior Roisin McGettigan (Wicklow, Ireland) led the Friars. Cullen placed fourth overall in a time of 20:57, while McGettigan finished fifth in a time of 21:02. Graduate student Heather Cappello (Lockport, N.Y.) finished 18th in a time of 21:36 and sophomore Deirdre Byrne (Avoca, Ireland) took 23rd-place in a time of 21:49. Also scoring for the Friars was senior Emer O'Shea (Limerick, Ireland), who finished 25th in a time of 21:51.

The Friars will compete at the NCAA Championship on Monday, November 25 in Terre Haute, Ind.
