Cross Country Teams to Compete in NCAA Championships

Nov. 14, 2010

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The NCAA Division I Track and Field Committed has selected the Providence College men's and women's cross country teams as at-large participants in the NCAA Championships. The races will be held on Monday, November 22, at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course located at the Wabash Valley Family Sports Center in Terre Haute, Indiana. The women's championship is scheduled to start at 12:08 p.m. The gun goes off for the men at 12:48 p.m.

Each NCAA field will include 18 teams who earned automatic berths by placing top two in the nine regional meets. Additionally, both the men and women's races will include 13 at-large programs from around the country. Both Providence teams were selected based on their previous efforts this season.

The 14th-ranked Friar women's resumes includes a third-place team-effort at Saturday's Northeast Regionals in Madison, Conn. The PC women were led by sophomore Shelby Greany's (Suffern, N.Y.) third-place individual effort. Greany completed the 6-kilometer endeavor in 19:56.4. Two weeks prior, the black-and-white earned third place in the BIG EAST Championships on October 30. Again, it was Greany leading the way with a fourth-place, 6K time of 20:50.5.

The credentials of the 28th-ranked Providence men also include a third-place team finish at this weekend's Northeast Regionals, led by the second-place individual effort of junior Lee Carey (Bedworth, England). Carey completed Saturday's 10K in Madison in 29:48.5. On October 30, the Friars placed third in the BIG EAST Championships, out racing three other nationally ranked opponents in the process. Carey won the individual title to lead the way, completing the 8K in 24:56.8.

The Friar teams will look to improve on last year's performances on the championship stage. In 2009, the Friar women earned eleventh in the NCAA Championships, led by current junior Hannah Davidson's (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) 37th place. The men grabbed 20th, led by Carey's 52nd-place individual finish.
