Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams Ranked In National Polls

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released the national rankings today and both the Providence College men's and women's cross country teams are ranked in the top-30. The women stand at No. 21 in the national rankings with 104 points while the Friar men stand at No. 23 in the nation with 98 points. The women moved up three spots after earning a fifth-place finish at the BIG EAST Championships on Saturday, October 31. Washington holds the top spot in the women's rankings while the Stanford men sit atop the polls.

The men's team also competed at the BIG EAST Championship in Milwaukee, Wis. and finished fifth out of 14 teams with 97 points on the 8K course. The Friars were led by junior David McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland) who placed sixth individually with a time of 25:04. Sophomore Lee Carey (Bedworth, England) was Providence's second overall finisher in ninth place with a time of 25:06. McCarthy and Carey each earned All-BIG EAST honors for placing among the top-15 individually. The Friars' remaining scorers on the day were sophomores Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand), Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand) and Matt Terry (Danbury, Conn.). Channon finished 21st with a time of 25:44. Matthews took 26th place in a time of 25:56, while Terry placed 35th (26:08).

The women's cross country squad finished fifth out of 16 teams at the BIG EAST Championships with 108 points on the 6K course. Freshman Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.) led the Friars with a ninth-place finish in a time of 21:36. Greany earned All-BIG EAST honors by virtue of finishing among the top-15, individually. She also was the top finisher among all freshmen competitors. Sophomore Hannah Davidson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) placed 18th for Providence with a time of 21:53. Senior Breffini Twohig (Dublin, Ireland) was the Friars' third finisher at 23rd overall (22:10). Rounding out the scorers for Providence were freshman Samantha Roecker (Charlton, N.Y.) and junior Emma Perron (West Hartford, Conn.). Roecker placed 26th in a time of 22:15, while Perron placed 32nd (22:20).



Both squads will compete at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship on Saturday, November 14. The event will take place at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. with the men racing at 2:30 p.m. followed by the women at 3:30 p.m.
