Providence Men's Cross Country Finishes Second At The BIG EAST Championship; Women Finish Fourth
Nov. 1, 2002 BOSTON, MASS. - The 17th-ranked Providence College men's cross country team scored 49 points and finished second behind Villanova (39 points) at the BIG EAST Cross Country Championship on Friday, November 1 at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. PC's 14th-ranked women's team scored 89 points and placed fourth behind Notre Dame (69), Georgetown (70 points) and Villanova (88 points). Friar senior Adam Sutton (Preston, England) captured the individual men's title in a time of 23:33. It marked the eighth time a Friar men's runner has won the individual crown and the first time since Keith Kelly won in 2000. Also, Sutton's time was the second fastest ever run at Franklin Park for the BIG EAST Men's Cross Country. It is second to Kelly's time of 23:21 in 2000. Sophomore Dylan Wykes of Kingston, Ontario and sophomore Pat Moulton (Pelham, N.H.) also ran strong races for the Friars. Wykes placed sixth (24:01) and Moulton finished ninth (24:06). Providence's other scorer's were senior Tyler McCabe of Mystic, Conn. (15th - 24:18), sophomore Pat Guidera of Clonmel, Ireland (18th - 24:34), freshman Martin Fagan of Mullingar, Ireland (30th - 25:08) and Joe Dionne of Oshawa, Ontario (31st - 25:11). The Friar women were led by senior Roisin McGettigan (Wicklow, Ireland) who finished in fifth place in a time of 20:38. Providence sophomore Mary Cullen (Sligo, Ireland) placed sixth in a time of 20:40. Also scoring for PC were graduate student Heather Cappello of Lockport, N.Y. (17th - 21:22), Emily Tallen of Kingston, Ont. (28th - 21:49) and Deirdre Byrne of Avoca, Ireland (33rd - 22:04). The men's and women's teams return to action on Nov. 16 at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships at Van Cortlandt Park in New York, N.Y.
