Providence College Men's and Women's Cross Country Teams Ranked in the USTFCCCA Week 6 Poll

    PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association released national rankings today for the sixth week of the 2011 cross country season, with both Friar cross country teams represented. The men's team moved up 10 spots and is now ranked 14th with 190 points. The women's team is now ranked 7th with 276 points.

    Both teams ran at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational on Friday, October 14 in Madison, Wis. The men finished ninth of 39 teams. First in for the Friars was senior David McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland) in 21st place with a time of 24:11, followed closely by Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand) in 22nd place with a time of 24:12. Freshman Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland) had another strong performance by finishing 31st with a time of 24:18. Senior Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand; 24:51) and junior Ahmed Ali (Boston, Mass.; 25:15) rounded out the scoring by finishing 104th and 165th respectively.

    The women finished 16th of 43 teams at the Wisconsin adidas Invitational. Finishing first for the Friars was senior Hannah Davidson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) in 14th place with a time of 20:28. Sophomore Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand) finished in 19th place with a time of 20:37. Senior Charlotte Ffrench O'Carroll (Dublin, Ireland; 21:18), sophomore Grace Thek (Melbourne, Australia; 21:23), and senior Mary Kate Champagne (Plattsburgh, N.Y.; 22:16) rounded out the scoring for the Friars, finishing in 99th, 113th, and 235th respectively.

    The team will race again on Friday, October 21, at the Central Connecticut Mini-Meet in New Britain, Conn.
