MEN'S AND WOMEN'S CROSS COUNTRY TEAMS RANKED IN PRESEASON POLLS

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced its 2009 Preseason Poll and both the Providence College men's and women's cross country teams are ranked in the top 20. The women find themselves at No. 12 in the National rankings with 210 points while the Friar men stand at No. 16 in the nation with 164 points. The women earned the top spot in the Northeast Region while the men landed at No. 2 in the region.

The Friar women finished the 2008 campaign with a 13th-place showing at the NCAA Championships while the men placed 20th in the 31-team field.

Both teams kicked off the 2009 season with impressive performances at the New Hampshire Opener on Sunday, September 6 in Durham, N.H. The women earned the top-three spots in the race and five of the top six. The Friars were led by freshman Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.) who finished the three-mile course in 16:46. The dominant performance in her first-ever collegiate race earned her BIG EAST Cross Country Athlete of the Week honors. Freshman Samantha Roecker (Charlton, N.Y.) placed second-overall in a time of 16:58 and junior Hannah Davidson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) finished third in a time of 16:59.

The men saw similiar results as they claimed the top-four places in the five-mile race led by senior Hayden McLaren's (Christchurch, New Zealand) time of 25:07. Sophomore Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand) finished second overall in 25:09 with junior David McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland) finishing third-overall in 25:10. Sophomore Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand) rounded out the top four with a time of 25:15.

 

 

The two teams are in action next when they compete in the Ted Owen Invitational at Stanley Quarter Park in New Britain, Conn. on Saturday, September 26 at 10:00 a.m.
