    PROVIDENCE, R.I. -

The Providence College women's cross country team enters the 2012 campaign ranked seventh in the nation, and second in the Northeast Region, according to the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association preseason poll released Tuesday, August 28.

On the men's side, the Friars will enter the season ranked fourth in the Northeast.

The Friar women received 270 points, and are one of five BIG EAST schools in the top-30 entering the season.

Providence returns many of its top runners from a 2011 team that placed fifth at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships, and second at the BIG EAST Championships. Returners include junior Emily Sisson (Chesterfield, Mo.), senior captains Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.) and Sam Roecker (Charlton, N.Y.), junior Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand) and junior Erin Murphy (Easton, Mass.).

The Friars also have added a strong group of freshmen to this season’s roster.  Freshmen Sarah Mary Collins (Basel, Switzerland), Molly Keating (Rehoboth, Mass.), Lauren Mullins (Binghamton, N.Y.), Kathleen Powell (Wrentham, N.Y.) and Katie Sischo (Jamesville, N.Y.) will be joining the Friars charge.

The Friar men, who garnered 28 points in the national poll, placed 22nd at the 2011 NCAA Championships. The returnees on the men’s side include 2010 BIG EAST Cross Country Champion, senior Lee Carey (Bedworth, England), senior captains Ahmed Ali (Boston, Mass.) and Eric Malnati (Walpole, N.H.) and sophomore Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland).  Freshman Harvey Dixon (Aldershot, England) also looks to make his mark this season.

The Friars will try to continue a remarkable trend of qualifying both teams for the NCAA Championships. Providence has accomplished the feat in 15 of the last 17 seasons.

The men and women will begin the 2012 season on Friday, August 31, at the UNH Invitational in Durham, N.H.
