Women's Cross Country and Men's Soccer Teams Earn D I-AAA All-Sports Trophies

July 13, 2011

It was announced today that the Providence College women's cross country team and the men's soccer squad received the Division I-AAA Athletics Directors Association (DI-AAA ADA) All-Sports Trophies for their success during the 2010-11 season. Providence, which finished 113th in the final Learfield Sports Directors' Cup standings, also ranked eighth among NCAA Division I-AAA institutions (non-FBS/FCS schools).

The women's cross country team finished ninth of 31 teams at the 2010 NCAA Cross Country Championships held in Terre Haute, Ind. It marked the program's first top-10 finish at the national championships since 2006 and the 17th time they have accomplished the feat. Overall, it was Providence's 22nd appearance at the NCAAs. Sophomore Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.) paced the Friars with a 12th-place finish and earned All-America honors in cross country for the first time in her career. Providence also finished third at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship and fourth at the BIG EAST Championships.

The men's soccer team enjoyed one of its most successful seasons in program history. Providence finished with a 13-6-3 overall record, one win shy of tying a school record for most victories. The Friars also advanced to the BIG EAST Championship final, but were defeated in a penalty-kick shootout. Providence then earned an at-large berth to the NCAA Tournament and hosted its first ever NCAA Championship match. The Friars defeated Saint Peter's, 6-2, to advance to the second round for the second time ever. On their way to the NCAAs, the Friars had a 10-game unbeaten streak (8-0-2), including seven consecutive wins.
