PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- It was announced on Thursday, April 23 that junior cross-country runner Gladys Ganiel (Harrington, Maine) earned and GTE Academic All-America First Team At-Large honors for her performance in the classroom during the cross-country season this past fall.
Ganiel, a political science major, has earned a cumulative grade point average of 3.97 in her first three years at Providence. The junior from Harrington, Maine excelled this past fall helping the cross country team place sixth at the NCAA Cross Country Championship on Nov. 24. She finished 21st and scored as Providence placed second in the NCAA District I Cross Country Championship on Nov. 15. On October 17, Ganiel placed ninth and helped team win the New England Cross Country Championship. She also finished 17th and helped the team win its third consecutive BIG EAST Cross Country title. In 1995, she helped the PC cross-country team capture its first NCAA title.
This honor is not new to Ganiel, who earned 1996 GTE Third Team At-Large Academic All-America honors for the fall and 1997 GTE Second Team At-Large Academic All-America honors for the spring in track. She also received 1996 and 1997 BIG EAST Academic All-Star honors.
