PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- It was announced on Thursday, February 12 that Providence College student-athletes Tim Curran (Northboro, Mass.) and Lisa Cappello (Lockport, N.Y.) were named BIG EAST/Aeropostale Scholar Student-Athlete Award winners. Curran and Cappello will receive a $2000 stipend for graduate studies.

Curran, a graduate student on the men's cross country and track teams, has been named a BIG EAST Academic All-Star each of the last four years. A business administration major and co-captain of the cross country team, Curran has participated in two NCAA Cross Country Championships, including the 2003 season when he finished third among Providence runners. Curran also led the Friars to their 23rd New England Cross Country Championship as he finished 11th overall. Curran also placed 13th in the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship to lead PC to a second-place finish. Last season, Curran earned All-New England honors in the 5,000 meters, finishing second at the New England Indoor Track Championships on February 28.

Cappello, a senior on the cross country and track teams, has earned BIG EAST Academic All-Star honors the last three years. She has competed in four NCAA Cross Country Championships, including 2003 when she captained the team to a third-place finish. It marked the team's best finish at the NCAA's since 1995 when the Friars captured the title. In addition to its success at the NCAA's, Providence won four of its seven meets in 2003, including the NCAA Northeast Regional title.
