Providence Men Capture NCAA District Championship
Pc Women Place Second
Both Teams Qualify for the NCAA Championship on Nov. 24
BOSTON, Mass. -- The 19th-ranked Providence College men's cross
country team captured the NCAA District 1 Cross Country Championship on
Saturday, Nov. 15 at Franklin Park in Boston Mass., and qualified for the NCAA
Championship. In the women's District 1 Championship also at Franklin Park, the
fifth-ranked Friars finished in second place and also qualified for the NCAA
Championship. The top two teams in the men's and women's race in each NCAA
District Championship advance to the NCAA Championship on Nov. 24 at Furman
University in Greenville, S.C.
The men were led by junior Ben Noad of Bristol, England, who placed
sixth in a time of 32:16. Sophomore Keith Kelly of Drogheda, Ireland (seventh -
32:17), senior Paul McNamara of Galway, Ireland (17th - 32:44), junior Carl
Mauro of Hornell, N.Y. (28th - 33:06) and junior Zack Ventress of Spokane, Wash.
(35th - 33:19) all scored for the Friars.
Junior Sarah Dupre of Kingston, Ontario led the women's team as she
finished fourth in a time of 18:17. Also scoring for the women's team were
freshman Rachel Hixson of Media, Pa. (seventh - 18:26), senior Maria McCambridge
of Dublin, Ireland (ninth - 18:37), sophomore Dana Ostrander of Ballston Lake,
N.Y. (20th - 19:08) and Gladys Ganiel of Harrington, Maine (21st - 19:09).
The men's and women's teams return to action on Nov. 24 at the NCAA
Championships at Furman University in Greenville, S.C.
