Providence Men's and Women's Cross Country Finish 10th at NCAA Championships

The ninth-ranked Providence College men's cross country team scored 294 points to finish tenth at the 2001 NCAA Championships on Monday, November 19 at Furman University in Greenville, S.C. PC's 11th-ranked women's team scored 337 points to place tenth. In the men's race junior Adam Sutton (Preston, England) finished 24th (30:00) to lead the Friars. Senior All-American Hamish Thorpe (Auckland, New Zealand) took the 29th spot (30:03). Sutton and Thorpe were both named to the 2001 All-America Team. For Thorpe, it was the second straight season he has earned All-America honors, while Sutton earned the honor for the first time. Senior Dermot Galvin (Kilrush, Ireland) finished 33rd (30:05), while freshman Patrick Guidera (Clonmel, Ireland) placed 128th (31:15) and junior Tyler McCabe (Mystic, Conn.) finished 141st (31:25). Freshman Patrick Moulton (Pelham, N.H.) took the 179th place (31:50) to round out the seven PC contenders.
In the women's race the Friars were paced by senior Claire Shearman (Portsmouth, N.H.) who finished 33rd (21:21) and earned 2001 All-America honors for the first time in her career. Junior Roisin McGettigan (Wicklow, Ireland) finished 53rd (21:43) and senior Kathryn Casserly (Galway, Ireland) placed 66th (21:10). Freshman Deirdre Byrne (Avoca, Ireland) finished 114th (22:16), junior Emer O'Shea (Limerick, Ireland) placed 157th (22:36), sophomore Lisa Cappello (Lockport, N.Y.), finished 196th (23:02) and freshman Mary Cullen (Sligo, Ireland) placed 214th (23:15).
For the men's cross country team, it marked the 12th time that the Friars have placed in the top-ten at the NCAA Championships. The women's team earned a top-ten finish for the 12th time in 13 years at the NCAA Championships.
