BOSTON, MASS. - The 8th-ranked Providence women's cross country team and the 21st-ranked Providence men's cross country team competed at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championships on Saturday, November 15 at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. The Friar women captured their third NCAA Regional Championship with 49 points, while the men's team finished second (73 points) behind Iona (58 points). With their respective finishes, the men's and women's teams automatically advance to the NCAA Championship on November 24 at Byrnes Park/Irv Warren Memorial Golf Course in Waterloo, Iowa (hosted by Norther Iowa University).

In the women's race, junior Kim Smith (Auckland, New Zealand) won the women's individual NCAA Regional title, while senior Mary Cullen (Sligo, Ireland) followed with a second-place finish. Smith completed the 6K course in a time of 20:23, while Cullen finished the race in 20:31. Also scoring for the Friars were sophomore Fiona Crombie of Christchurch, New Zealand (8th - 21:22), junior Deirdre Byrne of Avoca, Ireland (15th - 21:43) and senior Lisa Cappello of Lockport, N.Y. (23rd - 22:00). Columbia finished second in the team standings with 62 points and also earned an automatic qualification to the NCAA Championship. Smith's win marks the first individual NCAA Regional Champion since 1999. Heather Cappello '02 was the last Friar woman to win the regional title. As a team, the Friars won NCAA Regional Championships in 1998 and 1999, with this year's win marking the third all-time.
 

 

In the men's race, junior Dylan Wykes (Kingston, Ontario) and junior Patrick Moulton (Pelham, N.H.) each finished among the top-10. Wykes paced the Friars with a third-place finish (30:00) and Moulton completed the 10K course in eighth place (30:26). Also scoring for Providence was graduate student Tim Curran of Northboro, Mass. (30:43), junior Patrick Guidera of Clonmel, Ireland (24th - 31:03) and sophomore Joe Dionne of Oshawa, Ontario (24th - 31:04).

The men's and women's teams will return to action on November 24 at the NCAA Cross Country Championships in Waterloo, Iowa.
