Nov. 13, 2004
BRONX, N.Y. -- The second-ranked Providence College women's cross country team and the 16th-ranked men's team each finished first at the 2004 NCAA Northeast Regionals on Saturday, November 13 at Van Cortlandt Park. The women's team automatically qualified for the NCAA's for the 16th-consecutive season, while the men advanced to the NCAA's for the 10th-consecutive year.
The women's team (54 points) was the first to compete on a cold afternoon in the Bronx. Senior All-American Kim Smith (Auckland, New Zealand) continued her dominance this season as she captured the individual title in a time of 20:08 to lead Providence to its fourth NCAA Northeast Regional crown. PC also won the event in 1998, 1999 and 2003. Smith, who has won all four races that she has participated in this season, won her second consecutive NCAA Northeast Regional title. Sophomore Fiona Crombie (Christchurch, New Zealand) ran one of her best races of the season as she placed second in a time of 20:08.
Senior All-American Mary Cullen (Sligo, Ireland) took 11th-place as she crossed the finish line in a time of 21:12. Senior Deirdre Byrne (Wicklow, Ireland) and junior Jane Nalder (Wellington, New Zealand) also scored for the Friars. Byrne came in 19th-place (21:35), while Nalder took 21st-place (21:41). The men's team scored 51 points en route to its fifth NCAA Northeast Regional title and first since 2001. The Friars took the fourth, fifth and sixth positions with senior Patrick Moulton (Pelham, N.H.) leading the way. Moulton's time of 30:45 helped him finish fourth. Senior Dylan Wykes (Kingston, Ontario) finished right on Moulton's heels as placed fifth in a time of 30:48. Wykes was followed by junior Martin Fagan (Mullingar, Ireland), whose time of 30:49 was good for sixth-place. Friar graduate student Michael DeCoste (Duxbury, Mass.) took 12th-place, crossing the finish line in a time of 31:15. Rounding out the list of scorers was senior Patrick Guidera (Clonmel, Ireland), who recorded a 24th-place finish (31:49). For 21st-year Head Coach Ray Treacy, it marks the second time in his illustrious career that he has guided both the PC men's and women's teams to NCAA Northeast Regional Cross Country titles in the same year. The men's and women's teams will compete on Monday, November 22 at the NCAA Championships in Terre Haute, Indiana.
