Men's And Women's Cross Country Teams Each Finish Fifth At BIG EAST Championship

MILWAUKEE, Wis. - The Providence College men's and women's cross country teams competed at the 2009 BIG EAST Championship on Saturday, October 31 at the Wayne E. Dannehl Cross Country Course in Milwaukee, Wis. The Friar men finished fifth out of 14 teams with 97 points. The women's team finished fifth out of 16 teams with 108 points.

The men's team was led by David McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland) who placed sixth individually with a time of 25:04. Lee Carey (Bedworth, England) was Providence's second overall finisher in ninth place with a time of 25:06. McCarthy and Carey each earned All-BIG EAST honors for placing among the top-15 places individually. The Friars' remaining scorers on the day were Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand), Julian Matthews (Nelson, New Zealand) and Matt Terry (Danbury, Conn.). Channon finished 21st with a time of 25:44. Matthews took 26th place in a time of 25:56, while Terry placed 35th (26:08).

In 31 appearances all-time at the BIG EAST Championship, the Providence College men's program has won the BIG EAST title 15 times and has finished among the top-five 15-straight seasons. The Friars also have finished among the top-three 25 times.

On the women's side, Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.) led the Friars with a ninth-place finish in a time of 21:36. Greany earned All-BIG EAST honors by virtue of finishing among the top-15, individually. She also was the top finisher among all freshmen competitors. Hannah Davidson (Saratoga Springs, N.Y.) placed 18th for Providence with a time of 21:53. Breffini Twohig (22:10) was the Friars' third finisher at 23rd overall (22:10). Rounding out the scorers for Providence were Samantha Roecker (Charlton, N.Y.) and Emma Perron (West Hartford, Conn.). Roecker placed 26th in a time of 22:15, while Perron placed 32nd (22:20).



In 28 appearances all-time at the BIG EAST Championship, the Providence College women's program has earned five BIG EAST titles and has finished among the top-five 25-straight seasons. The Friars have placed among the top-three at the championship 20 times.

The Friars return to action on Saturday, November 14 at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship. The event will take place at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass.
