Men's And Women's Cross Country Teams Place Fourth At BIG EAST Championship

BRONX, N.Y. - The Providence College men's and women's cross country teams competed at the 2008 BIG EAST Conference Cross Country Championship on October 31. The event was held at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y. Both squads finished fourth in the team standings. The men's team earned 89 points, while the women's team recorded 123 points. On the women's side, the Friars were led individually by senior Danette Doetzel (Macklin, Saskatchewan). Doetzel finished sixth overall with a time of 20:43. For her efforts, she earned All-BIG EAST honors for the third-consecutive time in her career. Junior Krystal Douglas (Harpswell, Maine) was the second Friar to cross the finish line in 23rd place overall with a time of 21:19. Senior Katie DiCamillo (Garden City, N.Y.) placed 27th (21:28), followed by junior Breffini Twohig (Dublin, Ireland) who finished 31st (21:31). Rounding out the list of Friar women to score points on the day was freshman Mary Kate Champagne (Plattsburg, N.Y.). Villanova secured the women's team title at the 2008 BIG EAST Championship (40 points). Marie Loui Asselin, of West Virginia, took the individual title with a time of 20:10. Providence's fourth-place finish marks the 24th time in program history that the Friars finished among the top-four teams at the championship. The Friars own five BIG EAST team titles overall, with the last coming during the 2006 campaign. A year ago, Providence placed second. On the men's side, Providence was paced by sophomore David McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland). McCarthy finished third in the field with a time of 24:25. He also was the first sophomore in the field of 14 teams to cross the finish line. Senior Richard Yeates (Dublin, Ireland) finished 15th individually with a time of 25:02. McCarthy and Yeates each earned All-BIG EAST honors for placing among the top-15 in the individual standings. Junior Hayden McLaren (Christchurch, New Zealand) crossed the line in 16th place with a time of 25:06. Rounding out the list of Providence's individual scorers on the day were junior Michael Anderson (Ajax, Ontario) and freshman Dominic Channon (Nelson, New Zealand). Anderson placed 25th (25:23), while Channon crossed the line in 30th place (25:30). The Friars have finished fourth or better in the BIG EAST team standings 28 times in the program's illustrious history. The program has an impressive 15 BIG EAST team titles under its belt, with the last coming in 2006. Last season, the Friars placed third at the BIG EAST Championship. Andrew Bumbalough, of Georgetown, won the 2008 individual title with a time of 23:55. Bumbalough also led the Hoyas to their sixth BIG EAST team title.
Providence cross country returns to action on November 15 at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship. The event will be held at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y.
