Women's Cross Country Captures BIG EAST Title; Men's Team Finishes Third
Oct. 29, 2004 BOSTON, MASS. - The second-ranked Providence women's cross country team and the 22nd-ranked men's cross country team competed at the BIG EAST Championships on Friday, October 29 at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. The women's team captured the BIG EAST title with a total of 42 points, while the men's team finished third overall with 52 points. Head Coach Ray Treacy and Assistant Coach Nick Jackson were named BIG EAST Conference Women's Cross Country Coaches of the Year. The women's team was led by senior Kim Smith (Auckland, New Zealand), who won the individual crown in a time of 19:23, marking her second-straight BIG EAST title. Smith's time shattered the existing BIG EAST Conference record by one minute and marks the second fastest time ever run on the 6K course at Franklin Park. Notre Dame's Lauren King set the previous BIG EAST Championship record at Franklin Park in 2002 with a time of 20:23. Smith also holds the BIG EAST Championship record for cross country at Van Cortlandt Park (Bronx, N.Y.), where she won the BIG EAST title in a time of 20:01 in 2003. Senior Mary Cullen (Sligo, Ireland) finished second with a time of 20:10. Junior Fiona Crombie (Christchurch, New Zealand) finished fourth in a time of 20:11 to round out the PC runners who completed the race among the top-10 individual finishers. Senior Deirdre Byrne (Wicklow, Ireland) finished 15th in a time of 21:09, followed by Jane Nalder (20th - 21:26). Notre Dame finished second with 67 points, while Villanova captured third place with 84 points. PC's team victory marks the fourth BIG EAST title all-time for the women's program. The Friars won three-straight BIG EAST Championship titles in 1995, 1996 and 1997.
In the men's race, the Friars were led by junior Martin Fagan (Mullingar, Ireland) who finished fourth overall with a time of 23:43. Senior Dylan Wykes (Kingston, Ontario) and senior Patrick Moulton (Pelham, N.H.) also completed the race among the top-10 finishers. Wykes finished fifth in a time of 23:48, while Moulton took 10th overall with a time of 24:05. Freshman Max Smith (Dunedin, New Zealand) finished 14th (24:16) and senior Patrick Guidera (Clonmel, Ireland) placed 19th (24:28) to round out the scorers for Providence. Notre Dame captured the men's team title with 47 points. Georgetown finished second with 48 points. Bobby Curtis of Villanova won the men's individual title with a time of 23:26. The men's and women's teams return to action on November 13 at the NCAA Northeast Regional Championship at Van Cortlandt Park in New York, N.Y.
