BOSTON, MASS. - The Providence College men's and women's cross country teams each claimed 2006 BIG EAST Conference Cross Country titles on Friday, October 27 at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. Senior Martin Fagan (Mullingar, Ireland) won the individual title on the men's side for the second-straight year with a time of 23:09. Fagan's time set a BIG EAST course record at Franklin Park, eclipsing the previous mark of 23:21 set by former Friar Keith Kelly `01. Fagan also set the course record in 2005, while capturing the BIG EAST title at Van Cortlandtt Park in Bronx, N.Y. Graduate student Aine Hoban (Wakefield, England) paced the Friar women with a second-place finish in a time of 20:31. It marks the third time in the history of the two programs that they have swept the team championship titles in the same year. PC's men's and women's teams each won the BIG EAST team titles in 1995 and 1996. The Providence College cross country staff, led by veteran Head Coach Ray Treacy, also was honored as the staff of the year on both the men's and women's sides.

The Providence men's team captured its league-leading 15th BIG EAST Cross Country title overall and first since 2000. The Friars collected 52 points in the victory. Georgetown finished second in the team standings with 58 points. A Friar runner has earned the individual title at the BIG EAST Championship a total of 11 times, including five of the last six years. Fagan took the individual title in 2005 and in this year's championship. Fagan blew the field away, winning by a margin of 22-seconds. The second-place finisher overall was Kurt Benninger of Notre Dame (23:21). Also scoring for Providence in the race was junior Max Smith (Dunedin, New Zealand), junior Ahmed Haji (West Hartford, Conn.), sophomore Richard Yeates (Dublin, Ireland) and senior Nicholas Weidman (Sudbury, Mass.). Smith finished fourth in a time of 23:34. Haji completed the course in 10th place with a time of 23:55. Yeates finished 15th in 24:15, and Weidman placed 22nd in a time of 24:21. Fagan, Smith, Haji and Yeates each earned All-BIG EAST honors after the completing the course in the top-15. Smith was listed as the first junior in the field to cross the finish line. In another notable performance for the Friar men's team, first-year runner Hayden McLaren (Christchurch, New Zealand) was the second freshman runner in the field to cross the finish line. McLaren finished 26th overall in a time of 24:26.

The Providence women's team captured its fifth BIG EAST Cross Country title overall and first since 2004. The Friars collected 39 points in the victory. Georgetown finished second in the team standings with 68 points. PC was led by Hoban, who finished second overall with a time of 20:31. Also scoring for Providence was sophomore Danette Doetzel (Macklin, Saskatchewan), sophomore Katie DiCamillo (Garden City, N.Y.), freshman Breffini Twohig (Dublin, Ireland) and freshman Krystal Douglas (Harpswell, Maine). Each of PC's scoring team placed in the top-15 and claimed All-BIG EAST honors. Doetzel finished fifth in a time of 20:55. DiCamillo placed seventh in a time of 21:09. Twohig completed the race in 10th place with a time of 21:17 and Douglas finished 15th in a time of 21:33. Twohig was the first freshman runner in the field to cross the finish line. Doetzel and DiCamillo were the first and second sophomores to complete the race overall. Hoban, though a graduate student, was listed as the first senior to finish the race. Providence senior Meghan Owen (Danielson, Conn.) also had a great performance despite narrowly missing All-BIG EAST honors with a 17th-place finish in a time of 21:35.

Providence cross country returns to action on November 11 at the NCAA Regionals. The regionals will take place at Van Cortlandtt Park in Bronx, N.Y.
