Women's Cross Country Places Second At New England Championship
Oct. 13, 2000 BOSTON, Mass. -- The fourth-ranked Providence College men's cross country team won the New England Championship on Friday, October 13, 2000 at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass. Led by individual champion Keith Kelly (Drogheda, Ireland), the men's team scored 17 points to win its 20th New England crown. The 16th-ranked Providence women's cross country squad placed second with 57 points. Kelly won the men's race in a time of 23:39 to pace the Friars to victory. It marked Kelly's second consecutive individual New England title. Also scoring for PC were junior Hamish Thorpe of Auckland, New Zealand (second - 24:06), junior Paul Reilly of Loughrea, Ireland (third - 24:09), sophomore Adam Sutton of Preston England (fifth - 24:13) and junior Dermot Galvin of Kilrush, Ireland (sixth - 24:16). The women were led by senior Rachel Hixson (Media, Pa.), who placed second in a time of 17:35. Also scoring for the Friars were sophomore Roisin McGettigan of Wicklow, Ireland (sixth - 17:50), senior Francine Darroch of Cambridge, Ontario (ninth - 18:00), junior Kathryn Casserly of Galway, Ireland (16th - 18:14) and junior Claire Shearman of Portsmouth, N.H. (27th - 18:33). The PC men's and women's teams return to action on Oct. 27 at the BIG EAST Championships at Franklin Park.
