The Providence College men's and women’s cross country teams travelled to the fourth annual University of Wisconsin adidas Invitational in Madison, Wis. on Friday, October 12. The women’s team finished sixth out of 49 teams, and the men’s team placed 38 out of 46.
The No. 28 Friar women took sixth, finishing with 265 points. The Friars top finisher in the field of 327 runners was BIG EAST Athlete of the Week, freshman Sarah Mary Collins (Basel, Switzerland). Collins led the Friars with a sixth place finish (19:50) only 23 seconds behind race-winner Laura Hollander from California Polytechnic. Junior Laura Nagel (Napier, New Zealand) placed second on the team and 16th overall (20:04). Senior Shelby Greany (Suffern, N.Y.) placed 42nd for the Friars, finishing with a time of 20:24, while junior Grace Thek (Melbourne, Australia) finished 99th (20:50). Just behind Thek, senior Sam Roecker (Charlton, N.Y.) rounded out the scoring for Providence, checking in at 20:51 and placed 102nd overall.
“I’m delighted with the women’s performance,” said Ray Treacy. “It’s a huge improvement from two weeks ago.”
The men placed 38th overall of 46 teams at this year’s event with 919 points. Sophomore Shane Quinn (Waterford, Ireland) was the top-finisher for the Friars with an 84th place finish (24:13) out of the massive field of 316 harriers. Senior Alex Wallace (Waipukurau, New Zealand) was the second Friar to cross the finish line, placing 193rd (24:42). Freshman Harvey Dixon (Aldershot, England) scored in 203rd place (24:47) and junior Jonathan Hopkins (Bridgend, Wales) placed 209th (24:49). Sophomore Benjamin Connor (Derby, England) finished 230th with a time of 24:59.
