MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. -- The Providence College men's and women's cross country teams competed at the Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday, September 29 in Minneapolis, Minn. The PC women finished second behind Arizona St. and the Providence men finished in third place behind Wisconsin and Portland.

The Friars' women were led by senior Claire Shearman (Portsmouth, N.H.) was the first PC runner to cross the finish line as she completed the 6K course in 21:14.5 for an 11th-place finish. Right behind her in 17th place was junior Roisin McGettigan (Wicklow, Ireland), who finished in 21:25.6. Senior Kathryn Casserly (Galway, Ireland) was PC's third finisher in 34th place in a time of 21:50.1 A pair of freshmen were the Friars' fourth and fifth scorers as Deirdre Byrnes (Avoca, Ireland) and Mary Cullen (Sligo, Ireland) finished 35th and 42nd for the Friars. Byrne completed the race in a time of 21:52.2 and Cullen crossed the finish line in 21:58.3. Rounding out the finishers for Providence were junior Emer O'Shea (Limerick, Ireland), who finished 59th in 22:08.8, and senior Marissa Colburn (Wethersfield, Conn.), who finished 138th in 22:49.0.

The men's team was led by senior Hamish Thorpe (Auckland, New Zealand) and junior Adam Sutton (Preston, England). Thorpe was the Friars first finisher in a time of 24:20.2 with a sixth-place finish. Sutton was right behind Thorpe in seventh place in a time of 24:21.0. Senior Paul Reilly (Loughrea, Ireland) was PC's third finisher in a time of 24:51.4 for a 31st-place finish. Senior Dermot Galvin (Kilrush, Ireland) finished in 64th place in a time of 25:06.3 as PC's fourth scorer and he was followed by three freshmen to round out the PC harriers. Patrick Guidera (Clonmel, Ireland) finished 81st in 25:13.5, Patrick Moulton (Pelham, N.H.) finished 141st in 25:40.2 and Dylan Wykes (Kingston, Ontario) finished 143rd in 25:41.0

The PC women, ranked ninth nationally in Monday, September 24th's poll, scored a total of 139 points and finished 30 points behind the winner, Arizona State. The Providence men scored a total of 189 points and finished 60 points behind Wisconsin and 22 points behind Portland.

Both the men's and women's cross country teams compete next on Friday, October 12 at the New England Championships at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass.
