NOTRE DAME, Ind. - The Providence College men's and women's cross country teams competed at the Notre Dame Invitational on Friday, September 28 at the nine-hole Notre Dame Golf Course in Notre Dame, Ind. The men's team finished third with 124 points in the elite five-mile Blue Division race that featured 23 teams, while the women's squad placed sixth out of 21 teams in the highly competitive Blue Division with 177 points.

The men's team was paced by four runners who finished in the top 30 out of 178 runners. Senior Max Smith (Dunedin, New Zealand) led the way for PC with a fourth-place finish in a time of 23:54, and senior Ahmed Haji (West Hartford, Conn.) finished 11th in a time of 24:12. Freshman David McCarthy (Waterford, Ireland) finished 23rd (24:24) and sophomore Tom Webb (Barrington, RI) finished 28th (24:29), respectively. Notre Dame won the invitational with 92 points, and North Carolina State University (106) placed second. Senior Joshua McDougal of Liberty University was the individual winner with a time of 23:37.

On the women's side, Junior Danette Doetzel (Macklin, Saskatchewan) led all Friar runners with a ninth-place finish. Doetzel completed the course in a time of 17:05. Junior Katie DiCamillo (Garden City, New Jesey) finished 19th in a time of 17:25, followed by senior Michelle Childs (Cameron, Ontario), who placed 28th (17:33). Rice University took first place in the team standings with 118 points. Illinois (139), Florida State University (141), Michigan (148) rounded out the top five. Boston College (176) was the only other team to place ahead of Providence. Sophomore Susan Kuijken of Florida State University was the individual winner, finishing with a time of 16:32.

 

 

The Friars will return to action on Saturday, October 6 as they participate in the New England Championships at Franklin Park in Boston, Mass.
