MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. -- The fifth-ranked Providence College women's cross country team and the 15th-ranked Providence men competed at the Roy Griak Invitational on Saturday, September 27. The women finished fourth overall, while the men finished seventh.

The Providence women (144 points) were led by junior Kimberly Smith (Auckland, New Zealand), who captured the individual crown in a time of 20:17. Smith becomes the third runner at Providence to win the individual title at Roy Griak Invitational and the first since Sara Dupre did it in 1997.

Arizona State (103) won the team title, while Michigan State (122 points), and Columbia (125 points) finished second and third, respectively. Providence also was led by junior Mary Cullen (Sligo, Ireland) who finished eighth in a time of 21:00. Sophomore Fiona Crombie (Christchurch, New Zealand) recorded a time of 21:13 to finish 12th and junior Deirdre Byrne (Avoca, Ireland) placed 26th in a time of 21:36. Also scoring for the Friars was junior Katie Twarog (Albany, N.Y.) who finished 97th in a time of 22:32.

On the men's side, Wisconsin (89 points) won the title for the 10th time in the meet's history. Junior Dylan Wykes (Kingston, Ont.) was PC's highest finisher as he placed 18th in a time of 24:40. Classmate Patrick Moulton (Pelham, N.H.) placed 31st in a time of 24:52, while sophomore Joe Dionne (Oshawa, Ont.) placed 64th in a time of 25:25. Junior Patrick Guidera of Clonmel, Ireland (71st - 25:28) and senior Jamie Carmichael (76th - 25:33) also scored for PC.

 

 

The Providence men return to action on Friday, October 10 at the New England Championship, while the women will compete on Friday, October 17th at the Penn State Meet.
