BRONX, N.Y. -- The Providence College men's cross country team and seventh-ranked women's squad each finished second at the Fordham Invitational on Saturday, September 10 at Van Cortlandt Park in Bronx, N.Y. The Friar women were paced by senior Fiona Crombie (Christchurch, New Zealand) who captured the individual title, while senior Martin Fagan (Mullingar, Ireland) led the men's squad with a first-place finish.

The women's team finished with 45 points, 13 points behind first-place Princeton in the 17-team meet. Crombie, who was competing in her first meet of the season, ran a time of 17:48 to finish three seconds ahead of the closest competitor. Providence junior Meghan Owen (Danielson, Conn.) finished in fourth-place in a time of 18:20, while graduate student Aine Hoban (Wakefield, England) ran a time of 18:21 to place fifth. Senior Ashley Jensen (Lincoln, R.I.) also scored for the Friars as she took 12th-place in a time of 18:51. Graduate student Katie Twarog (Albany, N.Y.) rounded out PC's scorers with a 25th-place finish (19:09).

The men's squad recorded 52 points to finish second in the 19-team meet. Fagan, who also was competing in his first meet of the season, won the individual title by three seconds as he crossed the finish line in a time of 25:26. Senior Joe Dionne of Oshawa, Ontario (25:43) and sophomore Ahmed Haji of West Hartford, Conn. (25:44) placed third and fourth, respectively. Graduate student Liam Reale (Hospital, Ireland) and junior Nick Weidman (Sudbury, Mass.) also scored for the Friars. Reale finished 15th (26:19), while Weidman placed 30th (26:44).
 

 

Providence will return to action on Saturday, September 24 at the Roy Griak Invitational in Falcon Heights, Minn.
