WARWICK, R.I. -- The Providence College men's and women's cross country teams each finished first at the PC Invitational on Friday, September 5 at Goddard Park in Warwick, R.I.

The Providence women (21 points) finished ahead of Rhode Island (53 points) and New Hampshire (55 points) in each teams' season opener. The sixth-ranked Friars had five runners finish in the top nine, including the top three runners. Junior Kimberly Smith (Auckland, New Zealand) led the way with a first-place finish in a time of 17:06. Junior All-American Mary Cullen (Sligo, Ireland) finished right behind Smith in the same time of 17:06. Classmate Deirdre Byrne (Avoca, Ireland) took third place in a time of 17:25.

Rhode Island's Kristen Coon (Webster, N.Y.) finished fourth overall (17:26) to lead the Rams to a second-place finish. UNH's Lesley Read (Dover, N.H.) rounds out the top five as she finished in a time of 17:27. Sophomore Fiona Crombie of Christchurch, New Zealand (sixth - 17:27) and senior Lisa Cappello (ninth - 18:06) also scored to lead the Friars.

On the men's side, Providence (25 points) finished first ahead of New Hampshire (46 points), Connecticut (55 points) and Rhode Island (116 points). UNH's Steve Meinelt (Topsfield, Mass.) captured the individual title as he crossed the finish line in a time of 24:44. The Friars took the next four places as juniors Patrick Moulton of Pelham, N.H. (24:53), Dylan Wykes of Kingston, Ont. (25:00), Patrick Guidera of Clonmel, Ireland (25:10) and senior Jamie Carmichael of Windsor, Vt. finished second, third, fourth and fifth, respectively. Sophomore Joe Dionne (Oshawa, Ont.) also scored for the Friars as he recorded an 11th-place finish in a time of 26:07.

Providence will return to action on Friday, September 12 at the Boston College Invitational at 3:00 p.m.
