Providence Closes Out Home Schedule With Matches Against DePaul and Marquette.

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College volleyball team is set to close out its 2017 home schedule with matches against the DePaul Blue Demons and the Marquette Golden Eagles on Nov. 3-5.  The Friars will face the Blue Demons on Friday, Nov. 3 at 7:00 p.m. Providence will then finish its weekend against Marquette on Sunday, Nov. 5 at 4:00 p.m. The match against the Golden Eagles will be Providence’s Senior Day.

The Friars have an overall record of 15-12 and a 4-8 record in conference play. The Friars are currently eighth in the BIG EAST standings.

As a team, Providence is ranked in the upper half of the BIG EAST in all offensive categories. The Friars’ are ranked first in service aces (1.56 aces per set), fifth in assists (12.09 assists per set), fifth in hitting percentage (.216), and fifth in kills (12.87 kills per set).

Sophomore Addison Root (Wichita, Kan.) has been the leader of the Friars’ offensive efforts this season. Root leads the team in both kills (342) and service aces (32). In the BIG EAST, Root ranks fourth in kills per set average (3.60) and third in service aces per set (.34).

Sophomore Jenae Alderson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.), junior Megan Onyundo (Woodbridge, Va.) and sophomore Lindsey Schaible (Tampa, Fla.) have also been instrumental parts of the Friars offense as they have tallied 239, 214 and 185 kills, respectively. Schaible’s hitting percentage of .344 ranks eighth in the BIG EAST.

Freshman Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) has been the setter for the Friars this season and leads the Friars with 982 total assists. Barber’s 10.4 assists per set average ranks third in the BIG EAST.

Freshman McKenzie Lydon (Stuart, Fla.) leads Providence in digs with 300 (3.16 d/s). Barber and Root have also played important roles defensively as they have recorded 277 and 224, respectively.

The DePaul Blue Demons have a record of 8-17 and are 2-11 in the BIG EAST. The Blue Demons are currently ninth in the BIG EAST and are on a five match losing streak.

Brittany Maxwell is the leader of the DePaul offense. Maxwell has recorded 322 kills this season and her kill per set ratio (3.42) ranks sixth in the BIG EAST. Myah Reed and Claire Anderson have also been important parts of the offense as they have tallied 207 and 202 kills, respectively.

Kelsey Horvath has been the setter for DePaul having tallied 641 assists this season.

Defensively, the Blue Demons are being led by Haley Bueser. Ranked fifth in the BIG EAST for her dig per set ratio (4.08 d/s), Bueser has recorded a total of 371 digs this season.

The Friars defeated the Blue Demons, three sets to none. The scores of the sets were 25-20, 25-19 and 25-19. Root and Cayla Veverka (Collegeville, Pa.) had stellar matches for Providence, recorded 18 and 13 kills, respectively. Barber recorded a double-double with 41 assists and 13 digs. Onyundo led the team with 14 digs.

As a team, the Friars held DePaul to a .157 hitting percentage.

The Marquette Golden Eagles have a record of 17-7 on the year and are 11-2 in the BIG EAST. The Golden Eagles are second in the BIG EAST.

Marquette is the top ranked offensive team in the BIG EAST. They are ranked first in hitting percentage (.279), assists (13.78 per set), and kills (14.46 per set).

Allie Barber has had a major impact upon the Marquette offense. Barber ranks first in the conference with a 4.98 kill per set ratio and had a total of 433 kills on the season. She has stepped up her offense in conference as she averages 5.26 kills per set against BIG EAST schools.

Anna Haak and Jenna Rosenthal have also played important roles as well as they have recorded 215 and 218 kills, respectively.

Lauren Speckman is the setter for Marquette. Speckman has recorded 1019 assists and ranks first in the BIG EAST with a 12.13 assist per set ratio.

Defensively, Marquette is being led by Martha Konovodoff, who is fourth in the BIG EAST with an average of 4.10 digs per set and has 357 total on the season. Haak and Hope Werch both play important roles with 227 and 230 digs totaled, respectively.

Rosenthal leads Marquette in blocks with 98 total (1.13 blk/s) this season.

The Friars fell to the Golden Eagles, three sets to none. The set scores were 25-13, 25-23 and 25-21. Root led the team in kills with nine. Barber recorded a double-double to lead Providence in both assists (26) and digs (10).
