Providence To Host #16 Creighton For Two Match Weekend Series

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College volleyball team is set to host a two match weekend series against the #16 Creighton Bluejays on Oct. 27-28. Due to the fact that the Providence and Creighton are travel partners, they play each other in back-to-back matches over one weekend each season. Last year, the Friars traveled to Omaha, Neb. for two matches. The Friars first match against the Bluejays will take place on Friday, Oct. 27 at 7:00 p.m. The weekend will then conclude with a match at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28.

The Friars have started the season with an overall record of 15-10 and a 4-6 record in conference play.

As a team, Providence is ranked in the upper half of the BIG EAST in all offensive categories. The Friars’ are ranked first in service aces (1.56 aces per set), fourth in assists (12.41 assists per set), fifth in hitting percentage (.229), and fifth in kills (13.22 kills per set).

Sophomore Addison Root (Wichita, Kan.) has been the leader of the Friars’ offensive efforts this season. Root leads the team in both kills (327) and service aces (29). In the BIG EAST, Root ranks fourth in kills per set average (3.72) and third in service aces per set (.33).

Root has been especially solid against BIG EAST opponents. She averages 4.11 kills per set and has totaled 148 kills in league play.

Sophomore Jenae Alderson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.), junior Megan Onyundo (Woodbridge, Va.) and sophomore Lindsey Schaible (Tampa, Fla.) have also been instrumental parts of the Friars offense as they have tallied 227, 203 and 174 kills, respectively. Schaible’s hitting percentage of .357 ranks seventh in the BIG EAST.

Freshman Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) has been the setter for the Friars this season and leads the Friars with 929 total assists. Barber’s 10.68 assists per set average ranks third in the BIG EAST.

Providence’s has featured a well-balance team defense this season. The Friars are ninth in the BIG EAST in team digs with 14.20 a set, but are fifth in opponent hitting percentage as they hold teams to a .208 hitting percentage. Freshman McKenzie Lydon (Stuart, Fla.) leads Providence in digs with 284 (3.23 d/s). Barber and Root have also played important roles defensively as they have recorded 260 and 214, respectively.

The Creighton Bluejays have a record of 16-5 on the season and their 9-1 record has them sitting on top of the BIG EAST standings. In the latest AVCA rankings, the Bluejays are ranked 16th.

Creighton is one of the most well-balanced teams in the BIG EAST as they only rank outside of the top four in the league in service aces per set. The Bluejays rank first in kills per set (14.38), second in hitting percentage (.278), second in assists per set (13.30), second in digs per set (15.92), second in opponent hitting percentage (.193) and fourth in blocks per set (2.16).

Jaali Winters, Taryn Kloth and Marysa Wilkinson have spearheaded the Creighton attack. Winters leads the team with 250 kills (3.42 k/s) on the season with Kloth and Wilkinson not far behind with 221 (3.03 k/s) and 218 (2.99 k/s), respectively.  The offense is being set by Lydia Dimke. Ranking second in the BIG EAST with 10.81 assists per set, Dimke has a total of 692 assists on the season.

Brittany Witt has been the Libero for the Bluejays this season. She holds the third best dig per set ratio in the BIG EAST with 4.18 and has a total of 305 digs on the season.

Providence Volleyball Falls To Creighton
OMAHA, NEB. – The Providence College women’s volleyball team fell to the Creighton Bluejays on Nov. 12. The Friars drop to 13-19 (1-15) on the season while Creighton improves to 22-6 (16-0).
