The Providence College volleyball team (11-13, 3-4 America East) will play in-state rival Rhode Island on Wednesday, Oct. 23 in Kingston, R.I. The match is set to start at 7:00 p.m. The game will be televised on Cox Sports and will air on tape-delay, Sunday, Oct. 27 at 7:00 p.m.
Over the weekend the Friars played America East opponents Stony Brook and UMBC. Providence lost both hard-fought matchups, 3-1. Junior Mackenzie Ziegler (Portage, Wis.) and freshman Kayla Fitzgerald (Redlands, Calif.) tallied 24 total kills (3 per set) in the two games. Sophomore Jordan Wiesler (Coconut Creek, Fla.) had a combined 91 (11.3 per set) assists and freshman Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) recorded an overall 48 digs (6 per set).
Five Friars rank in the top-10 in the America East statistical categories. Cruz ranks first in digs per set (4.61). Cruz also ranks second in service aces (.46) with teammate Fitzgerald in ranking sixth (.32). Sophomore Lindsay Witt (Basking Ridge, N.J.) ranks second in blocks per set (.95) and third in hitting percentage (.280). Wiesler ranks third with 9.65 assists per set. Ziegler ranks fourth in kills per set (2.78) and Fitzgerald ranks ninth (2.56). Nationally, Cruz ranks 19th with .46 service aces per set.
SCOUTING RHODE ISLAND: The Rams are 10-12 on the season and 3-4 in the Atlantic 10. Franki Darnold leads the Rams with 3.78 kills per set. Callan Kinnan averages 10.51 assists per game and Lizzy Scanlon has tallied 3.81 digs per set. Rhode Island has lost two straight, at Duquesne (3-1) on Friday, Oct. 18 and at Dayton (3-0) on Sunday, Oct. 20. The Rams are 5-3 in home games on the year. As a team, URI has more kills (1086 to 962), assists (996 to 903) and digs (1313 to 1262) than its opponents.
