Providence Volleyball To Host Seton Hall and St. John’s

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College Volleyball is ready to continue its home stand as it hosts the Seton Hall Pirates and the St. John’s Red Storm on Oct. 20 and 22. The Friars will face the Pirates on Friday, Oct. 20 at 7:00 p.m. before facing the Red Storm on Sunday, Oct. 22 at 1:00 p.m.

The match against the Red Storm will serve as the team’s annual Pink Out Friartown game to support the Gloria Gemma Foundation.

The Friars have started the season with an overall record of 15-8 and a 4-4 record in conference play. Providence last played on the weekend of Oct. 13 and 15. The Friars defeated the Xavier Musketeers 3-1 before dropping a match against Butler, 3-0.

As a team, Providence is ranked in the upper half of the BIG EAST in all offensive categories. The Friars’ are ranked first in service aces (1.59 aces per set), fifth in hitting percentage (.230), fifth in assists (12.27 assists per set), and fifth in kills (13.09 kills per set).

Sophomore Addison Root (Wichita, Kan.) has been the leader of the Friars’ offensive efforts this season. Root leads the team in both kills (297) and service aces (26). In the BIG EAST, Root ranks fourth in kills per set average (3.71) and fourth in service aces per set (.32).

Sophomore Jenae Alderson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.), junior Megan Onyundo (Woodbridge, Va.) and sophomore Lindsey Schaible (Tampa, Fla.) have also been instrumental parts of the Friars offense as they have tallied 203, 178 and 156 kills, respectively. Schaible’s hitting percentage of .355 ranks sixth in the BIG EAST.

Freshman Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) has been the setter for the Friars this season and leads the Friars with 833 total assists. Barber’s 10.54 assists per set average ranks third in the BIG EAST.

Providence’s has featured a well-balance team defense this season. The Friars are ninth in the BIG EAST in team digs with 14.04 a set, but are fourth in opponent hitting percentage as they hold teams to a .208 hitting percentage. Freshman McKenzie Lydon (Stuart, Fla.) leads Providence in digs with 260 (3.25 d/s). Barber, Root and Alderson have also played important roles in defensively as they have recorded 210, 178 and 156 digs, respectively.


The St. John’s Red Storm have an overall record of 11-13 and are 5-5 in the BIG EAST.

While the team ranks seventh in hitting percentage (.209) and kills (12.57 k/s) in the BIG EAST, St. John’s has two standouts in Julia Cast and Hanna Wagner. Cast ranks second in the BIG EAST in kills per set with 4.01 and has 337 total kills on the season. Wagner ranks fifth in the BIG EAST in hitting percentage (.369).

Erica Di Maulo has been the setter for the Red Storm. Di Maulo has tallied 878 assists and averages 10.45 assists a set, which ranks fifth in the BIG EAST.

Amanda Sanabia and Delaney D’Amore have led the St. John’s defense this season. Sanabia leads the team in digs with 297 (3.54 d/s), with D’amore not far behind with 279 (3.32 d/s).

The Red Storm are the second best blocking team in the BIG EAST as they average 2.55 blocks a set. Danisha Moss and Wagner lead the team in this category as they rank third (1.27 blks/s) and sixth (1.02 blks/s) in the BIG EAST, respectively.

- Sophomore Cayla Veverka (Collegeville, Pa.)  was second on the team in kills during her return to the
- Schaible hit a team-high .400 (3-5). 
- Barber totaled 30 set assists, while Lydon and senior Chicyia Clark (Huntington Beach, Calif.) posted 11 and 10 digs, respectively. 

The Seton Hall Pirates have an overall record of 12-10 on the season and are 6-3 in the BIG EAST.

Abby Thelen is the leading offensive threat for Seton Hall as she has tallied 313 kills (3.82 k/s). Her kill per set ratio ranks third in the BIG EAST. Dominique Mason and Sharay Barnes have also played key roles as they have tallied 205 (2.77 k/s) and 188 (2.29 k/s), respectively. The setter for Seton Hall has been Sophia Coffey. Coffey has recorded 5.59 assists this season for the Pirates.

Sarah Kenneweg has played the libero position for the Pirates as she recorded 299 digs (3.65 d/s) this season.

-Providence fell to Seton Hall, 3-0.
-Root led the Friars’ attack with 11 kills on the night. Alderson was second on the team with eight kills.
-Barber set the attack with 21 assists.
-Defensively, Clark led Providence with 11 digs. Lydon, Onyundo and Barber added eight digs as well.

The Providence College volleyball team fell to BIG EAST foe St. John’s in straight sets, 3-0 (21-25, 19-25, 16-25), on Friday, Sept. 29 in Queens, N.Y. The Friars dropped to 13-5 overall and 2-1 in the BIG EAST. The Red Storm improved to 9-9 (1-2 BIG EAST).
