The Providence College volleyball team (11-11, 3-2 America East) will play in two road games this weekend, starting at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Stony Brook. On Sunday the team will face UMBC at 2:00 pm. As of Thursday Albany, Stony Brook, UMBC and Providence are in a tie for second place in the America East standings. The four teams are 3-2 in league play.
The Friars played Wednesday and defeated non-conference opponent, Saint Peter's, 3-0. Junior Mackenzie Ziegler (Portage, Wis.) led the team with 10 kills. Sophomore Jordan Wiesler (Coconut Creek, Fla.) had a game-best 33 assists. Defensively, freshman Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) led the team with 11 digs.
In the conference, Cruz leads the America East in digs per set with 4.49. She also ranks second in service aces per set at .47, which is 18th in the nation. Sophomore Lindsay Witt (Basking Ridge, N.J.) ranks second in blocks (.95 per set) and fifth in hitting percentage (.278) in the America East. Ziegler ranks third in the conference in kills with 2.87 per set. Freshman Kayla Fitzgerald (Redlands, Calif.) ranks fourth in service aces (.36) and also falls tenth in kills (2.51) and digs (2.91). Wiesler is currently third in assists with 9.41 per set.
SCOUTING STONY BROOK: The Seawolves are 9-12 on the season and 3-2 in the America East. Stony Brook as a team ranks first in the conference in service aces, averaging 1.85 per set. Kaitlin Costello leads the team in kills per set with 3.11, which also leads the conference. Hannah Dolan has recorded 8.54 assists per set and Laura Hathaway leads in team in digs with 4.06 per set. The team is 2-0 this season when playing at home.
SCOUTING UMBC: The Retrievers enter with an overall record of 12-8, 3-2 in the America East. When playing at home, UMBC has a record on 6-2. As a team, UMBC ranks first in the conference in hitting percentage (.203), assists (11.36 per set), opponent hitting percentage (.144), kills (12.14 per set), blocks (2.11 per set) and digs (15.65 per set). Individually, the team is led by Ali Goc who has registered 2.64 kills per set. Mallory McIntyre has a conference-best 9.78 assists per set and Casey Griffith contributes to the defense with 4.06 digs per set.
