Providence Volleyball Set To Host Xavier and Butler

PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College volleyball team is set to take on BIG EAST rivals the Xavier Musketeers and the Butler Bulldogs on Oct. 13 and 15. The Friars will start the weekend with a match against the Musketeers on Friday, Oct. 13 at 7:00 p.m. ET. Providence will then finish the weekend with a match against the Bulldogs on Sunday, Oct. 15 at 1:00 p.m. ET. The matches coinside with Providence College's Spirit Week, which is a series of student-centered events on campus surrounding Friars Athletics.

SCOUTING PROVIDENCE:

The Friars have started the season with an overall record of 14-7 and a 3-3 record in conference play. Providence last played on the weekend of Oct. 6-7. The Friars dropped a match against Marquette before bouncing back with a win against DePaul.

As a team, Providence is ranked in the upper half of the BIG EAST in all offensive categories. The Friars' are ranked first in service aces (1.63 aces per set), fourth in hitting percentage (.232), third in assists (12.33 assists per set), and fourth in kills (13.19 kills per set).

Sophomore Addison Root (Wichita, Kan.) has been the leader of the Friars' offensive efforts this season. Root leads the team in both kills (273) and service aces (30). In the BIG EAST, Root ranks fourth in kills per set average (3.74) and third in service aces per set (.36).

Sophomore Jenae Alderson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.), junior Megan Onyundo (Woodbridge, Va.) and sophomore Lindsey Schaible (Tampa, Fla.) have also been instrumental parts of the Friars offense as they have tallied 186, 163 and 147 kills, respectively. Schaible's hitting percentage of .361 ranks fourth in the BIG EAST.

Freshman Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) has been the setter for the Friars this season and leads the Friars with 764 total assists. Barber's 10.61 assists per set average ranks second in the BIG EAST.

Providence's has featured a well-balance team defense this season. The Friars are ninth in the BIG EAST in team digs with 14.18 a set, but are sixth in opponent hitting percentage as they hold teams to a .203 hitting percentage. Freshman McKenzie Lydon (Stuart, Fla.) leads Providence in digs with 240 (3.29 d/s). Barber, Root and Alderson have also played important roles in defensively as they have recorded 210, 178 and 134 digs, respectively.

SCOUTING XAVIER:

The Xavier Musketeers have started the season with a record of 7-14 and are in 2-5 in the BIG EAST. The Musketeers last played a non-conference match against Dayton on Oct. 10. Xavier dropped the match three sets to none.

Kristen Massa has been the leader of the Musketeer offensive efforts this season. Massa leads the team in kills with 185 (3.36 k/s). Lauren Frilling, Maya Krause, and Morgan Finn have also played important roles as well, recording 139, 137 and 135 kills, respectively.

Mackenzi Humm and Nadia Dieudonne have split setting duties this year. Humm has recorded 352 assists (5.33 a/s) while Dieudonne has added 315 (4.63 a/s).

The Musketeer strength has been their defense. As a team, the Musketeers rank first in digs per set (16.45 d/s), third in blocks (2.51 blocks per set) and fourth in opponent hitting percentage (.199). Meredith Klare plays the libero position for Xavier and has tallied 360 digs (4.56 d/s).  Frilling and Newsome both average at least one block per set for the Musketeers. Frilling has 80 total blocks on the year while Newsome averages 1.17 blocks per set and has a total of 77 on the year.

SCOUTING BUTLER:
The Butler Bulldogs have started the season with an overall record of 14-5 and are 4-3 in conference play. The Bulldogs last played St. John's and Seton Hall on Oct. 6-7. Butler went 2-0 that weekend.

As a team, Butler ranks third in both hitting percentage (.235) and kills per set (13.45) in the BIG EAST.  Whitney Beck has led the Bulldogs offense this season. Beck has recorded a total of 231 and averages 3.45 kills per set. Beck's kill per set average ranks seventh in the BIG EAST. Natalie Ravenell, Brooke Gregory and Anna Logan have all been essential to the Bulldogs efforts this season as well. The three have added 159, 140 and 121 kills, respectively, for Butler to this point in the season.

Makayla Ferguson is the setter for the Bulldogs. Ferguson ranks fifth in the BIG EAST with 10.32 assists per set and has tallied 712 assists this season.

Butler have also been real strong defensively as they rank first in both opponent hitting percentage (.153) and blocks per set (2.98) and third in digs (15.33) in the BIG EAST. Beck has been a solid two-way player for Butler having recorded 209 digs (3.12 d/s). Taylor Takeda is second on the team with 178 digs and averages 4.45 digs per set.

Bri Lilly and Rachel Klitzing have been strong blockers for Butler as they average 1.35 and 1.39 blocks per set, respectively.

Volleyball Falls In Four Sets To Xavier
The Providence College women’s volleyball team dropped a 3-1 (17-25, 22-25, 25-23, 19-25) decision against Xavier in a BIG EAST Conference contest on Nov. 4. With the setback Providence falls to 13-16 overall and 1-12 in the BIG EAST while Xavier improves to 15-11 on the year with a 10-4 mark in league play.
