PROVIDENCE, R.I. --The Providence College volleyball team (1-20, 0-3) will play its first match at home of the 2012 season when they host the Stony Brook Seawolves in a conference matchup on Sunday, October 7 at 1:00 p.m. To date, the Friars have played their first 21 matches of the season on the road.
The Friars played earlier in the week, falling to in-state rival Bryant University in straight sets on Tuesday, October 2. In the loss, freshman Jordan Wiesler (Coconut Creek, Fla.) collected 31 of the Friar’s 32 assists, cracking the 30 assist mark for the seventh time this season. Wiesler’s assist total of 579 ranks third in the conference. Sophomores Anna Russian (Round Rock, Texas), Mackenzie Ziegler (Portage, Wis.) and Colleen McCollom (Indian Head Park, Ill.) have all registered over 150 kills this season for the Friars, while Russian and McCollom have each scored over 20 service aces. Senior Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) owns a team-high 302 digs and a 4.14 digs per set average, which both rank fourth in the conference.
Scouting Stony Brook (6-9, 1-1): The Stony Brook Seawolves will play at New Hampshire on Friday, October 5 before playing the Friars on Sunday. The Seawolves split their pair of conference matches last weekend, defeating Hartford in four sets on Friday, September 28, but falling to Albany by the same score on Sunday, September 30. Melissa Rigo leads the conference with a 4.36 kills per set average and is second on Stony Brook with a .233 hitting percentage. Nicole Vogel has collected 478 assists and owns an 8.10 assist per set average, both good enough for fifth in the America East. Rigo, Vogel and three other Seawolves have collected over 120 digs this season.
