Senior Abby Majewski Will Be Honored Tuesday In A Pre-match Ceremony

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team (9-12) will play its last home match of the 2009 season against intra-state rival Bryant University (5-12) on Tuesday, October 6 at 7:00 p.m. in Mullaney Gymnasium. Prior to the match, senior outside hitter Abby Majewski (Sunderland, Mass.) will be honored for her contributions during her four-year tenure with the program.

Tuesday's matchup marks the second meeting between the Friars and the Bulldogs this season. Bryant won the first meeting, 3-2, on September 5 in the Volley in the Valley Tournament in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. Freshman defensive specialist Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) posted a career-high 29 digs in the match, marking the highest dig total for a Friar so far this season.

The Friars are coming off a 3-1 victory over St. Francis (N.Y.) on Wednesday, September 30 in Brooklyn Heights, N.Y. Sophomore Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) played a strong all-around match for the Friars. She tied a career-high with 45 assists, notched eight digs and six kills, posted three service aces and hit at a .500 clip. Sophomore Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.), sophomore Lauren Hendel (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) and Majewski all posted double-digit kills for PC against St. Francis, marking the first time this season that three Friars have notched double-digit kill totals in a match.

Majewski will be honored Tuesday after a strong four years in Friartown. As a senior co-captain, she has been the leader of the Friars in 2009. As one of the hardest workers on the team, she holds the distinct honor of being the only player in Providence College volleyball history to ever make and start on the varsity team as a walk-on. In 321 career games, she has posted totals of 507 kills, 310 digs and 74 total blocks. A starter during her junior and senior seasons, she ranks second on the Friars in 2009 with 171 kills and is fourth on the team with 26 total blocks.

 

 

Bryant (5-12) Bryant is coming off a 3-0 loss to Central Connecticut State on Friday, October 2 in Smithfield, R.I. Senior captain Julie Geonnotti led the Bulldogs with nine kills and added nine digs in the match. Geonnotti ranks second on the team with 281 assists in 2009 and is fourth on the squad with 139 digs. Sophomore middle blocker Maria Scocca leads the Bulldog offense, recording 226 kills on the season. Scocca also ranks first on the team with 87 total blocks and has posted 15 service aces. She notched an impressive 29 kills and added six total blocks in the first meeting with the Friars on September 5.

What's Next? After Tuesday's matchup with the Bulldogs, Providence hits the road for a four-match trip to close out the 2009 season. First up for the Friars is a 7:00 p.m. contest with Central Connecticut State on Wednesday, October 14 in New Britain, Conn.
