Friar Volleyball Drops Conference Opener To New Hampshire In Four Sets

    PROVIDENCE, R.I. --The Providence College women's volleyball team lost to New Hampshire, 3-1, in its America East opener in four sets (18-25, 25-12, 20-25, 20-25) on September 30.

    The Friars were led by senior middle blocker Shelagh Dolan (Westford, Mass.) who registered 12 kills and .579 hitting percentage for the match. Senior middle blocker Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) added 15 kills while junior libero Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) notched 17 digs. Senior setter Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) had a solid performance, collecting 33 assists and 14 digs.

    The Friars dropped the first set, 25-18, despite 8 kills from Fletcher and 12 assists from Morrison. Dolan also converted on all 4 of her kill attempts. The Friars responded soundly in the second set winning 25-12 behind a .448 team hitting percentage. Senior outside hitter Lauren Hendel (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) led the team with 7 kills while freshman outside hitter Mackenzie Ziegler (Portage, Wis.) added a team-high 5 assists in the set.

    The Friars hot hitting ended there as they dropped to .100 and .194 in the final two sets respectively. The Friars lost the third and fourth sets by a score of 25-20 despite 8 assists from Morrison in the third set and 9 assists in the fourth.

    New Hampshire was led by 15 kills from Amy Keding, while Lauren Laquerre and Morgan Thatcher added 14 and 13, respectively. Jansen Falcusan added 42 assists and Laquerre led the Wildcats with 14 digs.

    The Friars return to action at Alumni Hall on Sunday, October 2 to face conference opponent Hartford at 2:00 p.m. There will be an instructional youth clinic and team autograph session following the match.
