Providence College’s Barber Named BIG EAST Freshman Of The Week In Volleyball

NEW YORK, N.Y. -  The BIG EAST conference announced its weekly volleyball awards on Tuesday, Sept. 26. Providence College freshman Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) was named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week, while sophomore Addison Root (Wichita, Kan.) was named to the weekly honor roll.

Barber was an instrumental part of the Friars’ 2-0 start in conference play. She averaged 10.67 assists per set over the course of the two-match weekend. Against Villanova, Barber recorded a double-double with 52 assists and 11 digs.  

Root was named to the BIG EAST honor roll as she averaged 4.67 kills per set in conference play. Her weekend was highlighted by a double-double against Villanova, that saw her record 21 kills and 10 digs. Providence’s victory over Villanova was the first win since the Friars’ rejoined the BIG EAST in 2014. The last time Providence had defeated Villanova was in 2000.  

The Friars next match comes against St. John’s on Friday, Sept. 29. Providence will play the Red Storm in Queens, N.Y. at 7:00 p.m.
