PROVIDENCE, R.I. -- The Providence College volleyball team (1-17, 0-1) will play two America East conference games this weekend. The Friars will begin their slate in Binghamton, N.Y. when they take on the Binghamton University Bearcats on Friday, September 28 at 7:00 p.m. Following the match, the Friars will travel to Baltimore, Md. to play the UMBC Retrievers on Sunday, September 30 at 2:00 p.m.
Sophomores Mackenzie Ziegler (Portage, Wis.) and Anna Russian (Round Rock, Texas) are tied for the team lead with 155 kills, while Russian leads the team and ranks second in the conference with a .258 hitting percentage. Freshman Jordan Wiesler (Coconut Creek, Fla.) leads the Friars with 500 assists and ranks fifth in the America East with a 7.94 assists per set average. Senior Cassie Muzzonigro’s (Gibsonia, Pa.) team high 264 digs and 4.19 digs per set average ranks second and third in the conference, respectively.
Scouting Binghamton (4-12, 1-0): The Binghamton University Bearcats will enter Friday’s match with the Friars with a 4-12 record and winners of their last two matches. The Bearcats won their conference opener at home versus UMBC in straight sets on Friday, September 21. Four players have recorded over 100 kills thus far for the Bearcats, led by Iva Partaleva with 218. Amanda Dettmann owns a team high 584 assists and her average of 9.27 assists per set ranks third in the America East overall.
Scouting UMBC (7-11, 0-1): The Retrievers enter the weekend having dropped their last two matches including their conference opener on the road versus Binghamton, 3-0. UMBC will host New Hampshire on Friday, September 28 before hosting the Friars on Sunday, September 30. Sherelle Walker leads the Retrievers with 184 kills, while Emily Witsaman leads the team with a .228 hitting percentage and the conference with a 1.20 blocks per set average.
Providence will play its first match at home this season on Sunday, October 7 versus America East foe Stony Brook. This match will mark the first athletic event played in the renovated Mullaney Gymnasium in Alumni Hall.
