Providence Volleyball To Travel To Black Knights Invitational

PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College Volleyball team is set to travel to the Black Knights Invitational in West Point, N.Y. on Sept. 14. The tournament will be hosted by West Point and will be the final tournament for the Friars this season. Over the course of the two-day tournament, Providence will take on Akron, West Virginia and West Point.

SCOUTING PROVIDENCE:

The Friars are off to their best start in program history as they are currently 11-0. Over the course of the win streak, Providence has won 33 of 38 possible sets.

 

The Providence attack is being led by sophomore Addison Root (Wichita, Kan.) The sophomore is averaging 3.66 kills per set and has a total of 139 kills on the season. Sophomore Jenae Alderson (Brooklyn Park, Minn.) and junior Allison Impellizeri (Seaford, N.Y.) have also played important roles in the offensive. Alderson is second on the team with 118 kills (3.11 k/s) and Impellizeri is third with 95 kills (2.50 k/s). Freshman Allison Barber (Woodbury, Minn.) has been the setter for the team this season and averages 11.6 assists per set. On the season, Barber has tallied 421 assists.


 

 

 

The Friars have employed a well-balanced defense as they have four players with at least 100 digs on the season. Freshman McKenzie Lydon (Stuart, Fla.) leads Providence with 152 digs (4.00 d/s). Root, Barber, and Alderson have been great two-way players as they have tallied 119, 116, and 102 digs, respectively.

 

SCOUTING AKRON:

The Akron Zips have begun the season with a record of 3-5.

 

Kayla Gwozdz is leading the Zips with 125 kills (4.17 k/s). Emily Weigand has been the setter for Akron. Weigand has a total of 295 assists (9.83 a/s).

 

Taylor Sharrits has played the defensive specialist position for Akron. Sharrits leads the Zips with 121 digs (4.03 d/s).

SCOUTING WEST VIRGINIA:

The West Virginia Mountaineers have begun the season with a record of 4-2.

 

Payton Caffrey and Mia Swanegan have been the two offensive threats for the Mountaineers. Caffrey leads the team in kills with 70 (3.50 k/s) with Swanegan second with 59 (2.95 k/s). Erin Slinde has been the setter for West Virginia with 183 assists (9.15 a/s).

 

Defensively, Alexa Hasting has been the team leader. Hasting has tallied 60 digs on the season.

 

SCOUTING WEST POINT:

The West Point Black Knights have started the season 5-5.

 

The West Point attack is led Amber Clay. Clay has tallied 108 kills and averages 3.48 kills per set. Nikki Lum is setting the attack. Lum has recorded 214 assists (6.11 a/s).

 

Clay is also the top defensive force for the Black Knights as she has 108 digs (3.48 d/s).
