PROVIDENCE, R.I. --The Providence College volleyball team (1-13) will travel to Lewisburg, Pa to play in the Bucknell University Tournament on Friday, September 14 and Saturday, September 15. This will mark the fourth and final tournament the Friars will play in during the regular season. The Friars will open the tournament versus Quinnipiac at 5:00 p.m. on Friday, September 14. The next day, the Friars will play Fordham and host Bucknell at 10:00 a.m. and 12:00 p.m. respectively.
The Friars last played on the road on Wednesday, September 12 versus cross-town rival Brown University but fell in three sets. Sophomore Kelly Ashmore (St. Louis, Mo.) collected a double-double, leading the Friars with 10 kills and collecting 11 digs, while leading the team with a .346 hitting percentage. Freshman Jordan Wiesler (Coconut Creek, Fla.) would end the match with 22 assists to lead all players and senior Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) would tie for the match-lead with 18 digs.
Sophomore Mackenzie Ziegler (Portage, Wis.) leads the Friars with 127 kills while classmate Anna Russian (Round Rock, Texas) has a team high .245 hitting percentage to go along with her 120 kills. Wiesler has already collected 405 assists and Muzzonigro has notched 203 digs, both to lead the Friars.
Scouting Quinnipiac (0-6): The Quinnipiac Bobcats currently hold an 0-6 record after playing in the West Point Invitational and Akron Invitational. The Bobcats last played on Wednesday, September 5 at Fairfield University, losing in straight sets. Tierra Allen leads the Bobcats with a 1.33 kills per set average. The Friars last played Quinnipiac on the road in 2010 and picked up a 3-1 victory.
Scouting Fordham (5-9):
The Rams, led by Lisa Hipp have won four of their last six matches to raise their record to 5-9. Hipp leads the team with 195 kills and is second on the team with 133 digs. The Rams opened their season 0-6 before picking up their first win of the season versus NJIT (3-2) during the Volley in the Valley Tournament. The Rams last played at home on Tuesday, September 11, defeating Lafayette in four sets. The Rams will play host Bucknell on Friday, September 14 before playing the Friars. The teams last met in 2005 during the Colgate Tournament, which saw the Rams defeat Providence in straight sets.
Scouting Bucknell (4-6): The Bison of Bucknell will look to break their four match losing streak which has brought their record to 4-6. Bucknell went 1-2 during the Bucknell University Tournament last year, defeating Fordham (3-2) and suffering losses to Manhattan (3-0) and Dartmouth (3-0). Jessica Serrato leads the Bison with 91 kills and is third on the team with 73 digs. The Bison last played the Friars during the 2010 Bucknell University Tournament, collecting a five set victory.
Providence will play its first match at home this season on Sunday, October 7 versus America East foe Stony Brook. This match will mark the first athletic event played in the renovated Mullaney Gymnasium in Alumni Hall.
