Volleyball Plays In Stetson Westin Classic This Weekend

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team travels to DeLand, Fla. on September 6-7 for the Stetson Westin Classic. Providence (2-2) will square off against Savannah State (0-3) on Friday at 5 p.m. Then on Saturday, Providence will play Stetson (1-3) at 11 a.m. and Bethune Cookman (0-3) at 1 p.m.

Providence is coming off of a 3-0 victory against Quinnipiac on Wednesday night. Last weekend, the team competed in the DePaul Invitational and went 1-2 in the tournament. Junior Annie Russian (Round Rock, Texas) was named to the DePaul Invitational All-Tournament Team. Freshman Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) was named America East Rookie of the Week on Tuesday, Sept. 3 for her play in the DePaul Invitational.

Three Friars have 30 or more kills on the year, led by junior Mackenzie Ziegler (Portage, Wis.) with 37. Juniors Colleen McCollom (Indian Head Park, Ill.) and Russian have 36 and 31, respectively. Sophomore Jordan Wiesler (Coconut Creek, Fla.) has 131 of PC's 150 assists. Cruz has a team-best 65 digs and seven service aces. Sophomore Lindsay Witt (Basking Ridge, N.J.) and Russian both have double digits in blocks with 17 and 11, respectively.

SCOUTING SAVANNAH STATE (Friday at 5 p.m.):Gabrielle Nathaniel and Bryana Gadis are both in the double digits with 15 and 12 kills each. Caitlynn Masoe is the leader in assists (29) and Alexis Washington has a team-best 23 digs. The Tigers lost each of their three games (Fordham, Tennessee Tech and Winthrop), 0-3.

SCOUTING STETSON (Saturday at 11 a.m.):Kaley Melville leads the Hatters in kills with 62. Kayla Weller tallied 173 assists and Michelle Kastner has 80 digs. Stetson won its first game, 3-1, victory over Drake. The Hatters have lost their last three matches against Wyoming (0-3), Montana State (2-3) and Idaho (1-3).

SCOUTING BETHUNE COOKMAN (Saturday at 1 p.m.):The Wildcats have lost three straight matches against Jacksonville (1-3), Southeastern Louisiana (0-3) and Florida Atlantic (0-3). Two players have double-digit kills for Bethune Cookman, led by Delicia Pierre (24) and Rhea Simon (17). Alexa Thomas has 63 assists and Normarie Rolon has registered 28 digs.
