PROVIDENCE, R.I. -The Providence College volleyball team will travel to Chicago, Ill. for the DePaul University Tournament, which runs Friday, Aug. 30 through Saturday, Aug. 31. On Friday the Friars will take on the host team, DePaul, starting at 8 p.m. Providence will then take on McNeese State and Chicago State on Saturday at 11 a.m. and 5:30 p.m., respectively.
Entering her 14th season, Head Coach Margot Royer-Johnson returns nine players, including six starters, and six newcomers also look to make and impact. Junior Annie Russian (Round Rock, Texas) led the Friars with 239 kills and 28 aces last season. Junior Kelly Ashmore (St. Louis, Mo.) was second on the team in digs with 219. Russian and sophomore Lindsay Witt (Basking Ridge, N.J.) teamed up for 42 and 62 block assists, respectively. Sophomore Jordan Wiesler (Coconut Creek, Fla.) ended the year averaging 8.11 assists per set.
Providence saw several of its players set career-highs in the team's final game of 2012, a five-set loss to Hartford on Sunday, Nov. 11. Wiesler collected a career-high 17 digs, while juniors Ashmore and Mackenzie Ziegler (Portage, Wis.) set career-highs in kills with 13 and 22, respectively. Junior Beth Hoyt (San Luis Obispo, Calif.) notched a career-best 16 digs, while Witt collected a career-best 11 kills. Ashmore (16 digs), Wiesler (48 assists) and Ziegler (12 digs) all earned double-doubles for the Friars.
The Friars had success last year in tournaments with two returning players being named to All-Tournament Teams. Junior Colleen McCollom (Indian Head Park, Ill.) was named to both the Duquesne/Robert Morris Invitational and The Harvard Tournament All-Tournament teams Ziegler was named to the Hofstra Tournament All-Tournament Team to open the 2012 season for the Friars.
The Friars placed seven student-athletes on the 2012 America East Fall Honor Roll. Cassie Muzzonigro ('13) and Russian were named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll for posting a fall grade-point averages of 3.5 or higher. McCollom, Ziegler and sophomores Nicole Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) , Emily Marzo (LaGrange Park, Ill.) and Wiesler were named as recipients of the America East Fall Honor Roll for achieving a grade-point-averages of 3.0 or higher.
DE PAUL (Friday at 8 p.m.): DePaul University enters the tournament coming off of a 10-18 performance last season. The Blue Demons are led by Vesela Zapryanova, who registered 350 kills in 2012. Allyson Rooks led the team in digs with 366 and Laura Witt averaged 6.35 assists per set. Nine letterwinners are returning for DePaul, while two letterwinners were lost. Three freshman will enter their first season with the team.
McNEESE STATE (Saturday at 11 a.m.): In 2012 McNeese put together a 7-25 record. The Cowgirls return eight players, including five starters, from the 2012 season and gain eight freshman to complete this year's squad. Amber Fryer led McNeese with 241 kills while Kelly Graham averaged 8.43 assists per set.
CHICAGO STATE (Saturday at 5:30 p.m.): Chicago State is coming off of a 2-30 season. Valeria Desiderio was third on the team with 190 kills on the year. Mysta Townsell was the team leader in digs, registering 427. Paula Sioto averaged 4.89 assists per set. Providence last played Chicago State in 2008 when the Friars played the Cougars twice, winning both matches 3-1.
