    Aug. 21, 2012

PROVIDENCE, R.I. --The Providence College volleyball team will begin its third season as a member of the America East Conference this weekend when the Friars travel to Hempstead, N.Y. to play in the Hofstra Tournament. The Friars will open the tournament playing host Hofstra and Marist on Friday, August 24 before playing Fairleigh Dickinson and UC Riverside on Saturday, August 25.

The Friars will play in the Duquesne/Robert Morris Invitational in Pittsburgh, Pa., the Harvard Tournament in Cambridge, Mass. and the Bucknell University Tournament in Lewisburg, Pa. this season. The Friars also will play seven regular season games including three conference games on the road before their first scheduled home match on Sunday, October 7 vs. Stony Brook. The extended stretch on the road is due to the home gym being reconstructed over the past spring and summer.

In her 13th season at the helm, Head Coach Margot Royer-Johnson will lead a young team which includes five sophomores and four freshman. Senior co-captain Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) is the lone upperclassman for the Friars and enters this season only 286 digs away from breaking the career record for the Friars. Last season, Muzzonigro accumulated 511 digs, the second-highest single-season total all-time. Sophomores Kelly Ashmore (St. Louis, Mo.), Beth Hoyt (San Luis Obispo, Calif.), co-captain Colleen McCollom (Indian Head Park, Ill.), Anna Russian (Round Rock, Texas) and Mackenzie Ziegler (Portage, Wis.) return for their second season with the Friars. The Friar volleyball freshman class has four members including Nicole Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.), the younger sister of 2012 graduate Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) who was named First-Team All-America East last season and currently serves as a graduate assistant for the volleyball team. Emily Marzo (LaGrange Park, Ill.), Jordan Wiesler (Coconut Creek, Fla.) and Lindsay Witt (Basking Ridge, N.J.) round out the freshman class.
