PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Providence College volleyball team lost 3-0 (25-21, 25-21, 25-12) against UMBC on Friday, Nov. 15 against UMBC. Providence's record now stands at 12-19 on the year and 4-9 in the America East. UMBC improves to 18-10 on the season and 9-4 in the America East.
The first set was back and forth early on and until the Retrievers pulled away after the teams were tied at seven. The Friars fought back to tie the game at 21 but UMBC went on a 4-0 run to win the set 25-21. Four players registered two kills for the Friars with freshman Kayla Johnson (Silver Spring, Md.) recording a .400 hitting percentage. Freshman Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) tallied four digs in the set.
UMBC won the second set, 25-21, in another back and forth battle. With the score tied at 21, the Retrievers again went on a 4-0 run to close out the set and go up 2-0 in the match. Junior Colleen McCollom (Indian Head Park, Ill.) had a team-best three kills in the set. Sophomore Jordan Wiesler (Coconut Creek, Fla.) added nine assists. Each team had 12 kills in the set.
The Retrievers closed out the match with a 25-12 third set win. Freshman Kayla Fitzgerald (Redlands, Calif.) had four kills for the Friars with a .400 hitting percentage.
Fitzgerald led overall with kills for Providence, with six on the night. Wiesler tallied 21 assists and Cruz contributed 10 digs.
UMBC was led by Emily Witsaman who had 13 kills. Mallory McIntyre had a game-best 38 assists and Casey Griffith added 13 digs.
The Friars play their last regular season game on Sunday, Nov. 17 against Stony Brook in Alumni Hall. The match is set to start at 1:00 p.m. and will be streamed live on CBS All-Access.
