Friar Volleyball Wins 3-1 On The Road At Pittsburgh

Pittsburgh, Pa. - Sophomore Sarah Katinger (Stratford, Conn.) and junior Heidi Filippi (Wooster, Ohio) turned in impressive games on Saturday afternoon at Pittsburgh to lead the Providence College Friars to a 3-1 win over the Pittsburgh Panthers in BIG EAST volleyball action.

Providence won the first two matches, 15-10 and 15-9 only to see Pittsburgh take the third game, 15-5. PC closed the verdict in the fourth game with a 15-13 win.

Katinger, the BIG EAST leader in kills, recorded a game high 26 kills while making just seven errorsin 62 chances for a .306 hitting percentage. Filippi added 16 kills with just five errors in 34 tries for a .324 hitting mark while leading PC in digs with 19.

Providence had five players in double figures for kills. Annie Cella (So., Burr Ridge, Ill.) followed Katinger with 21, Brooke Chupaila (Sr., Liverpool, N.Y.) added 11 and Samanthaa Lennon (Jr., Montclair, N.J.) chipped in 10 in the win. Senior setter Colleen Lee (Tonawanda, N.Y.) added to her school record for assists with 71 on the afternoon.

Pittsburgh was led by Jenna Birkel's 20 kills and Stacy Renick had 16 with just two errors to lead all players with a .389 hitting percentage.

The win improves Providence to 15-11 overall and the Friars are now 7-3 in BIG EAST play. Pittsburgh is now 10-11 and 3-7 in league play.

The Friars close out the regular season on Sunday afternoon at West Virginia in a 2:00 p.m. game. The Friars will be back in Pittsburgh next weekend, November 19-21 when the Panthers host the BIG EAST Tournament. Providence has already clinched a spot.
