The Providence College volleyball team fell to UMBC, 3-2, in America East regular-season action on November 13 in Providence, R.I.
The Friars took the first set by a narrow, 26-24, margin. Seniors Lauren Hendel (Lloyd Harbor, N.Y.) and Carly Morrison (Larkspur, Calif.) each recorded three kills to lead a balanced offensive effort. Morrison also contributed eight assists in the set, while junior Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) recorded seven digs. UMBC was led by Iman Kennedy's eight kills. Alexandria Spaay added 14 assists and four digs for the Retrievers.
UMBC rallied to tie the match, 1-1, with a 25-19 victory in the second set. Hendel, senior Lauren Fletcher (Syracuse, N.Y.) and freshman Kelly Ashmore (St. Louis, Mo.) each recorded four kills for Providence. Morrison recorded 12 assists in the set. Emily Vandegrift led the Retrievers with five kills, and Spaay recorded 14 assists.
In the third set, each team recorded 17 kills as the Friars came away with a 27-25 victory. Fletcher picked up the offensive load with six kills, while Ashmore added four. Morrison contributed 14 assists and Muzzonigro and Ashmore each collected four digs. Vandegrift led UMBC with six kills and Spaay tallied 16 assists.
UMBC forced a fifth-and-deciding set with a 25-20 victory in the fourth. Fletcher paced the Friars with six kills, while Kennedy and Dalton Tolliver each recorded four kills for the Retrievers. PC's Ashmore collected six digs.
In the fifth set, the Retrievers secured the match with a 15-4 victory. Vandegrift and Tolliver led the way with three kills each.
Lauren Fletcher completed the day with 20 kills and five blocks. Ashmore and Hendel finished with 12 and 11 kills, respectively. Morrison registered 45 assists and 11 digs.
