PROVIDENCE, R.I. – The Providence College volleyball team (1-28, 0-10 America East) fell to in-state rival Rhode Island (11-16, 6-7 Atlantic 10) 25-21, 26-24, and 25-17 on Wednesday, November 7 in Providence, R.I.
The Friars trailed early in the first set, falling behind 7-3 before running off seven consecutive points to take a 14-13 lead. After some back and forth play, the Friars held a 19-18 lead, but the Rams would go on to score seven of the next nine points to take the opening set, 25-21. Sophomore Kelly Ashmore (St. Louis, Mo.) tied for the set-high with seven digs.
The second set started out close before the Friars took a 10-7 lead. The Friar lead would extend their lead to six at 18-12 but the Rams begin to chip away at the Friar advantage. Rhode Island would eventually tie the set at 22-all before taking the set, 26-24. Kelly Rosenberg paced the comeback for the Rams with 17 assists in the set.
The third set of the match started out slow for the Friars, but a six point run in the middle of the set would help the Friars close the lead to two points, at 14-12. The Friars would not be able to pull any closer and fall 25-17 to close out the match.
Freshman Jordan Wiesler (Coconut Creek, Fla.) led the Friars with 20 assists, while senior Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) tied for a match-high 15 digs. Catie Steffen (12k, 15d) and Kelly Rosenberg (39a, 12d) each had a double-double for the Rams.
The match will air on tape delay on Cox three times, all at 7:00 p.m. The match will be televised on Saturday, November 10, Tuesday, November 13 and Thursday, November 15.
The Friars have two games later in the week that will close out the conference schedule for the Friars, with games on Friday, November 9 and Sunday, November 11. On Friday the Friars will play the Albany Great Danes on the road at 4:00 p.m. before hosting the Hartford Hawks in the season finale on Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
