Red Hot Friars Rally To Defeat Syracuse In BIG EAST Volleyball Action

Providence, R.I. - Sophomore outside hitter Sarah Katinger (Stratford, Conn.) and junior middle hitter Samanthaa Lennon (Montclair, N.J.) combined for 46 kills to lead the Providence College Friars to a 3-2 come-from-behind win against the Syracuse Orange in BIG EAST volleyball action Saturday afternoon in Alumni Hall.

Providence, winners of seven in a row and 11 of its last 13, dropped the first two games to Syracuse by 15-8 and 15-6 scores. The Friars then rallied with three straight wins, 15-9, 15-12 and 15-10 to improve their record to 13-9 overall and 5-2 in BIG EAST league action.

The loss drops Syracuse to 17-10 overall and 4-3 in the league.

Katinger recorded a match high 24 kills on the afternoon while recording a .213 hitting percentage. She also added 14 digs in the win. Lennon had a remarkable .415 hitting percentage as she recorded 22 kills while making just five errors in 41 chances.

Annie Cella (So., Burr Ridge, Ill.) and Heidi Filippi (Jr., Wooster, Ohio) were also in double figures with 14 and 11 kills respectively. Both had team highs with 16 digs on the afternoon. Senior setter Colleen Lee (Tonawanda, N.Y.) racked up 74 assists on the day and had five service aces. She started the week tied for fourth in the nation in service aces.

Syracuse was led by Dana Fiume who had 19 kills and 18 digs in the match, both being team highs.

The Friars return to action on Sunday, October 31st at 1:00 p.m. when they face BIG EAST leading Notre Dame at Alumni Hall. It will be Senior Day for the Friars' graduating class of Colleen Lee, Brooke Chupaila and Rachel Doxtater.
