WEST HARTFORD, Conn. - The Providence College volleyball team was defeated by Hartford, 3-1, on Sunday, Oct. 27. Providence's record now stands at 11-15 on the season and 3-5 in the America East, while Hartford improves to 9-15 overall and 3-5 in the America East.
Providence won the first set 25-23. Freshman Kayla Fitzgerald (Redlands, Calif.) led the way with four kills. Defensively, freshman Michelle Cruz (Midland Park, N.J.) recorded 9 digs in the set.
Hartford won the second set, 25-19, to knot the match at 1-1. Junior Mackenzie Ziegler (Portage, Wis.) led with four kills and Cruz again tallied nine digs.
Fitzgerald and junior Colleen McCollom (Indian Head Park, Ill.) registered six and five kills, respectively, in a 25-21 third-set loss.
The Hawks edged the Friars, 25-23, in the fourth set, to win the match 3-1. Sophomore Lindsay Witt (Basking Ridge, N.J.) led with four kills. She also teamed up with Ziegler to record two total blocks.
Overall, the Friars were led by Fitzgerald with 15 kills. Ziegler chipped in with double-digit kills (10). Sophomore Jordan Wiesler (Coconut Creek, Fla.) tallied 48 assists. Cruz led in digs with 29. Wiesler and Ziegler put up 12 and 10 digs, respectively.
Hartford was led by Kirton Dionna who had 16 kills. Sareeta Nethersole and Corinne Horanzy had double-digit kills with 15 and 10, respectively. Jackie Tamburri had a team-best 49 assists and 20 digs. Paola Llerandi and Nethersole added 18 digs each.
The Friars return home to Alumni Hall on Friday, Nov. 1 against UMass-Lowell. The match is set to start at 7:00 p.m. and will be streamed by CBS All-Access. Providence will also host New Hampshire the following day, Saturday, Nov. 2 at 2:00 p.m.
