The Providence College volleyball team fell to America East foe UMBC, 3-1 (18-25, 27-25, 15-25, 15-25), on Friday, October 26 in Providence, R.I.
UMBC took the first set, 25-18. The Friars scored four-straight points to start the set, but could not hold on to earn the victory. Anna Russian (Round Rock, Texas) led the Friars with four kills and Mackenzie Ziegler (Portage, Wis.) added three. Russian and Cassie Muzzonigro (Gibsonia, Pa.) each recorded four digs in the set. The Retrievers were led by Hannah Schmidt's five kills and Ali Goc's seven digs.
The Friars rallied to take the second set, 27-25, to even the match at one set each. Providence trailed by four points in the set (18-14), but battled to tie the set, 24-24. The Retrievers went ahead, 25-24, as Schmidt registered a kill off a set by Mallory McIntyre. The Friars answered with a kill by Colleen McCollom, assisted by Jordan Wiesler. Providence finished off the set and earned the 27-25 victory with a service ace by McCollom and a kill by Kelly Ashmore. Russian led the Friar attack with six kills, while Muzzonigro added seven assists. Schmidt recorded five kills in the set.
UMBC earned a 25-15 victory in the third set to take a 2-1 advantage in the match. For the Friars, McCollom notched five kills on 11 attacks. UMBC was led by Krystal Mlemchukwu's five kills.
The fourth also was decided 25-15 in favor of the Retrievers. Schmidt led the way with four kills for UMBC. Ziegler paced the Friars with three kills.
The Friars return to action on Sunday, October 28 against America East foe Binghamton. The match will be played at Alumni Hall/Mullaney Gymnasium in Providence, R.I. and is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m.
